Dr Kelly Wright
Dr Wright undertook medical training at University of QLD followed by residency in North QLD before moving to Victoria to complete physician training at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. Dr Wright sub-specialised in the field of Aged Care before heading to the UK to undertake further fellowship training at the Royal Bristol Infirmary focusing on cognition, falls and designing an orthogeriatric model in the British health system. Dr Wright has been a specialist in her field for over 13 years.
Following her training, Dr Wright worked in Townsville expanding the services delivered to the ageing population both in hospital and in the community. During this time, the service was able to expand from one geriatrician to five specialists allowing for increased service delivery to the older population. The service extended from Townsville to the surrounding rural and remote areas including telehealth services prior to 2011.
Settling in Melbourne with her young family, Dr Wright has embraced private practice. In 2015, the majority of care to the older population was in the hospital system and designed as a reactive management plan. Dr Wright was keen to deliver proactive care to the community in a relaxed outpatient environment. This model of care is growing and should be the focus to ensure we are ageing well. Her vision to provide a multidisciplinary team to the community is the first in private geriatric practice.
Dr Wright has an interest in:
- preventative medicine
- polypharmacy
- memory and the treatment of early dementia
- falls and osteoporosis
- helping people maintain their independence
Holistic Approach
She offers a holistic approach to patients, reviewing their individual circumstances. Dr Wright is keen to be a part of preventative medicine in a multidisciplinary team to ensure everyone is ageing well and living their years to the full. She is aware of the team involvement in everyone’s health and can schedule family conferences to assist in care planning. Dr Wright will tailor a management plan for her individual patients. Dr Wright is available for consultation for VCAT hearings, capacity assessments and can facilitate referral to the My Aged Care assessment team.
Dr Wright spent over two years with the team at Alfred Health in the clinical trials unit researching memory treatments and has connections with the clinical trial units in Melbourne to facilitate referral if preferred.
Dr Wright balances work with being a mother to four young boys, including twins. She has an interest in running and strives to find time to train for her next running event. Dr Wright has organised the Age Right team for the yearly Memory Walk and Jog in May each year. She also volunteers for the local multiple birth association offering support to young mothers trying to manage the joys and challenges of having twins through her vice president position for the Northern Inner Multiple Birth Association and is a cub leader for Scouts Victoria.
Dr Wright is available now for consultation in a variety of locations including home visits. Is it time to focus on ageing well?
