Dr Alex Tucker

Dr Alex Tucker developed his interest in geriatric medicine while studying for his medical degree at the University of Tasmania. He completed his basic physician training at the Royal Hobart Hospital before undertaking specialist training in geriatric medicine at Monash Health and Western Health in Melbourne, Victoria. He has a broad range of clinical experience having worked in community aged care, rehabilitation, acute aged care, orthogeriatric medicine, movement disorders and older persons’ mental health across metropolitan and regional Victoria and Tasmania. Dr Tucker joined the team of geriatricians at Age Right in 2021, providing consulting services in Sunbury. He is also currently working as a consultant geriatrician at Western Health.

Dr Tucker is passionate about delivering comprehensive and long-term care to older patients living in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. He believes a proactive approach is essential to maintaining independence and quality of life. Dr Tucker enjoys that his patients have led different and interesting lives, and he aims to work with them to develop an individual management plan according to their priorities and values.

Special Interests

Dr Tucker has special interests in diagnosis and management of dementia and delirium, movement disorders including Parkinson’s disease, osteoporosis, and medication reviews.

  • Osteoporosis and bone health
  • Chronic disease management in older people, including palliative care

Dr Tucker is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine (ANZSGM) and International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS). He presented his specialist trainee research project comparing pain relief after knee replacement in older English and non-English speaking patients at the ANZSGM Annual Scientific Meeting in 2019. Dr Tucker regularly attends national and international conferences (in person and now virtually) to stay up to date with the latest developments across all aspects of geriatric medicine. He enjoys providing teaching and mentorship to students and junior doctors.

Over the last few years, Dr Tucker has been involved in the delivery and clinical redesign of public community geriatric services in western Melbourne. In 2020, he was a member of a response team caring for patients with COVID-19 infections in residential care facilities. These experiences were personally and professionally challenging and provide ongoing motivation for Dr Tucker to be an advocate for his patients as they navigate the health system.
In his spare time, Dr Tucker enjoys travelling and exploring the outdoors with his family. He is an avid amateur cook and baker and can often be found in the kitchen with one of many cookbooks. If not there, he is likely watching Bluey with his young daughter!
